REIMAGINE: Wandsworth After Dark

April 2025 - June 2025

REIMAGINE: Wandsworth After Dark was a commissioned community-led spatial research project developed in collaboration with Wandsworth Council as part of the Co-Creating Wandsworth Residency at Super SATELLITE, New Acres Development.

The project examined how specific overlooked sites in Wandsworth - including Wandsworth Roundabout, Wandsworth Park and Spit Island - could be reimagined as welcoming, active and inclusive environments after dark. These locations are often perceived as unsafe or avoided during nighttime hours.

Rather than focusing solely on infrastructure, the project explored visibility, participation and collective presence as tools for cultivating safety.

Developed through two public workshops, a publication and a collective exhibition, the project invited residents and students to rethink what “safety” means after dark - positioning activation, care and shared authorship as design strategies.

WORKSHOP 1

The first workshop brought together local residents and architecture enthusiasts at Super SATELLITE to examine Wandsworth Roundabout, Spit Island and sections of Wandsworth Park during nighttime conditions, exploring how these spaces could become more welcoming and active after dark.

Through mapping, discussion and speculative design exercises, participants explored how underused areas could be activated through light, visibility, programming and collective presence. The session prioritised dialogue over fixed solutions, encouraging participants to challenge traditional narratives around urban safety.

WORKSHOP 2

To broaden the perspective of the project, a second workshop was conducted with students at South Thames College in Wandsworth, focusing on the same selected locations.

Engaging younger participants introduced alternative viewpoints on atmosphere, perception and public life after dark. Through drawing and spatial storytelling, students proposed imaginative interventions that emphasised creativity, social interaction and playful activation as tools for reclaiming space.

NEWSPAPER

The insights generated across both workshops were compiled into the second edition of the REIMAGINE newspaper.

The publication brings together collective reflections and site-specific spatial proposals to nighttime activation across Wandsworth Roundabout, Spit Island and Wandsworth Park. It documents how participants interpreted atmosphere, visibility and public life after dark, revealing recurring themes around perception, vulnerability and opportunity within these spaces.

Rather than offering top-down solutions, the newspaper positions safety as something shaped through presence, care and collective engagement. It reframes nighttime urban design as a shared civic responsibility - where activation, visibility and community participation become tools for cultivating sense of safety and belonging in the public realm.

EXHIBITION

The project was presented as part of the Co-Creating Wandsworth Residency exhibition at Super SATELLITE, where six resident practitioners showcased their work responding to the area.

Within this shared framework, REIMAGINE: Wandsworth After Dark exhibited the workshop outcomes and newspaper publication, extending the project into public visibility and further dialogue.

By situating the work within a collective residency context, the exhibition emphasised civic imagination as a shared cultural act rather than an isolated proposal.
